Workplace stress and trauma

High Pressure Work. High Impact Stress.

Workplace stress isn’t just stress—it can change your nervous system

Workplace stress and trauma

I see you.

Workplace stress iWorkplace stress is real. And over time, it can begin to change how your nervous system functions. It doesn’t always come from one overwhelming event. More often, it’s the accumulation of what you’ve had to carry, relentless demands, shifting expectations, unsafe situations, public criticism, or environments where your boundaries aren’t respected. Day after day, your body adapts to keep you going. And eventually, you may notice the cost, feeling anxious, on edge, emotionally exhausted, or disconnected from yourself in ways that don’t just “turn off” when the workday ends.

Professional Trauma

In some professions, the risks are real. You may have experienced situations where your safety was threatened, being attacked, injured, or put in positions where something could have gone very wrong. When your life, or your sense of safety, is put in jeopardy at work, it can impact you deeply. Not just in the moment, but in how your body continues to respond afterward. You might find yourself more on edge, more guarded, questioning your sense of safety or trying to control people or situations around you. It can begin to affect how you see yourself, your work, and your future. And often, it’s something you carry quietly, it feels isolating, overwhelming, or disorienting.

Vicarious Trauma & Compassion Fatigue

In many helping professions, you’re asked to witness what most people never have to see. Pain. Fear. Loss. Sometimes even death. Over time, your system doesn’t just observe these experiences—it absorbs them. You may start to feel more emotionally impacted, more tired in a way that rest doesn’t fully fix, or more disconnected from the parts of you that used to feel open, engaged, or alive. This is often referred to as vicarious trauma, and it commonly overlaps with compassion fatigue, what happens when you’ve given so much of yourself in service to others for so long. It’s not a failure. It’s a reflection of how much you’ve been carrying.

This work isn’t about pushing through or forcing yourself to cope better. It’s about helping your nervous system come out of survival mode, so you can feel more grounded, more clear, and more like yourself again.
